Stay in Hawkshead and you will experience all the atmosphere of a traditional Lakeland village - four pubs, good shops, and an ancient Church. A short distance away lies Beatrix Potter's home at Hill Top. At the same time, you'll have some of the country's finest scenery just on your doorstep.

For keen fishermen, our free membership permit offers you miles of excellent game and coarse fishing on rivers, lakes and tarns amidst stunning scenery. Or you might like to tickle a trout just two miles away on Esthwaite Water - by boat or from the bank for Browns and Rainbows. Esthwaite is renowned for its loch style fishing - the south basin offers bait, lure and fly, and there are boats with electric motors for the 200 acres of fly-only at the north basin. Rod hire and tuition are available both for beginners and experts alike, and Hawkshead Trout Farm specialises in family days out.

Hawkshead is the ideal location for walkers and cyclists, and well placed for touring the Lakes by car. Indeed, as well as its claim to be 'the prettiest village in the Lake District', Hawkshead can justly also claim to be at the centre of the National Park and the perfect starting point for your explorations of this beautiful corner of England.

Many splendid walks can be enjoyed from the village. The famous lakeland beauty spot Tarn Hows is not to be missed, while breathtaking panoramic views reward those who reach the summit of Laterbarrow.

Just above Hawkshead lies Grizedale Forest, some 9,000 acres, with many nature trails and picnic sites and the award-winning Sculpture Trail, the country's largest collection of sculpture in the landscape. Over 60 sculptures await discovery!

You can also cruise Coniston aboard the steam launch Gondola, visit John Ruskin's home at Brantwood, or make a shopping trip to Ambleside and a visit to the two-screen cinema which shows latest releases.
